Selecting an automation system should begin with the process, not the equipment. Walk through each task and record cycle time, error points, material variation, and operator decisions. A simple process map often reveals hidden delays near inspection, loading, or changeovers. Define measurable requirements, such as 30-second cycle time, consistent positioning, and less than two percent rejection. Include maintenance access and operator training in the specification. They are often ignored.
Test the system with real materials and normal production conditions. A short demonstration using perfect samples can create false confidence. Ask the supplier or internal engineering team to document test methods, safety checks, downtime, and failure recovery. Let experienced operators assess noise, access, screen prompts, and cleaning effort. Their comments may expose practical problems that technical reviews miss. My early mistake was trusting a successful trial without testing frequent product changes. The system worked, but changeovers consumed too much time.
Implementation needs a controlled pilot, clear acceptance criteria, and trained owners. Install the system during a defined production window, then compare actual results with baseline data. Track throughput, scrap, stoppages, and corrective actions for several weeks. Keep electrical drawings, software versions, spare-part lists, and maintenance instructions in one accessible location. Do not hide weak results. A small redesign may be wiser than forcing operators around a poor layout. Review the evidence before expanding automation to other lines.
